Tablecloths get hoity-toity with silk, beads, Swarovski

The tablecloth has become the star of the tabletop.

Forget plain white linen or humble red gingham: Today's best-dressed tables wear silk and satin that's embroidered, beaded or adorned with paillettes. The focus on elaborate fabrics means the table's traditional spotlight - a floral centerpiece, for instance - is shifting.

Manhattan-based Magnolias Linens (magnoliasgroup.com/ ) offers tablecloths embellished with Swarovski crystals and peacock feathers. Rentals cost $25 to $100 plus, and custom pieces sell for as much as $1,000.

Food and wine are afterthoughts: Like any good evening gown, these luxury linens aren't stain-resistant, but they can be dry-cleaned.

Magnolias' mostly Upper East Side clients coordinate their cloths with everything else in the dining room: drapes, rugs, china. But when the tablecloth is runway-ready, dinner-party hosts have other considerations.

"Of course, (the tablecloth) can't clash with what they're wearing," says Magnolias co-owner Asema Asghar.

"That would be a no-no."
